Implicit Modeling and Metamaterials: The Cool Parts Show All Access

Metafold CEO Elissa Ross describes one of the promises of more effective modeling of geometrically complex 3D printed forms: expanded use of metamaterials. To what extent can material “properties” come from geometry rather than the material itself?

The geometrically complex 3D printed structures enabling bioengineered medicine are featured in episode #70 of The Cool Parts Show. The bioreactor scaffold in this episode is so complex, its CAD model challenges computer processing.

Additive manufacturing is making this kind of challenge prominent, says Elissa Ross, CEO of Metafold. Her company provides implicit modeling technology enabling intricate forms to be molded more efficiently. Mathematical tools such as this are needed to deliver AM’s promise, she says. In this video extra, she talks about another aspect of that promise: metamaterials achieving their physical properties via complex geometry.
